If your student has mastered Phase I and is consistently exchanging a card for an item of their preference, you’re ready to move onto the next stage. Obviously, their PECS book isn’t going to always be conveniently placed in front of them, and their communication partner isn’t going to be patiently waiting for them to hand over the card. Sometimes we’re busy, sometimes the book’s on the floor… You get the idea.

After all, everything they want isn’t always going to be conveniently available in jars. Even if it was, wouldn’t it just be better to teach them how to open the jars to be independent? This is where the work with jars slowly begins to merge into Phase I PECS.

PECS Phase 1 – Learning to Initiate Interactions and Exchange

The first stage (or phase) of PECS is basically where we teach the studentĀ  the basic concept of initiating an interaction with another person and that interacting with other people can get your needs met.

At this early stage, the knowledge that symbols mean or represent things is a benefit but is not a requirement because this is essentially a token system.

An introduction to PECS

PECS BookPECS, the acronym for Picture Exchange Communication System, tells you what it’s all about with it’s name. It is communicating through the exchange of pictures. It was produced in the format best known now by Pyramid Educational Consultants Inc., although I would be very surprised if other people hadn’t used pictures to communicate before. What Pyramid did was take the concept of picture exchange communication, break it down into phases and establish the most effective form of teaching it.
